Obituary for Bernadine Marie Dooley

Peoria- Bernadine Marie Dooley, 89, of Peoria passed away peacefully at 2:53 PM on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home.

Bernadine was born on November 8, 1929 to Joseph A. and Regina M. (Hagemann) Groeper. Bernie, as she was known to her friends, married the love of her life, Eugene Francis Dooley, on September 11, 1954. She is survived by her six children: Patrick (Anne) of Rye NY ( Pat was her first anniversary present); Timothy (Kim) of Castle Rock CO; Stephen (Maria) of Prairieville LA; Michael (Kim) of Chicago IL; Thomas (Kim) of Louisville KY; and Barbara Ludy of Geneva IL. She is also survived by her grandchildren Michael, Connor, Sophia, Christina, Marina,Katherine, Lauren, Marissa and Ciana. Bernie is also survived by her sisters-in-law Martha Grawey Groeper, Agnes Groeper, and Fredericka Dooley Waugh.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Gene (7/23/1929 to 4/21/1993), and all of her sisters and brothers: Kenneth (Peggy and Clara), Jeannette Groeper Grawey (Leo), Roland Groeper (Martha), Cletus (Agnes), Lorraine Groeper Jackson (Bob), and also by her wonderful son-in-law Christopher Ludy.

Bernie graduated from Peoria High School in 1947, and after high school worked at several local companies including Caterpillar before settling down to the more-than-full-time job of raising six children. She was a member of Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Peoria and its Women’s Guild, the Catholic Women’s League and the Spalding Council Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary. A woman of great faith, Bernie prayed the rosary every day and attended daily mass. At different points in her long life, she played on many bowling teams and played tennis and golf, and she loved lunch with her friends afterwards as much as the games.

Bernie always had a sparkle in her eye, a ready smile and a quick wit. She had many, many friends whom she loved dearly, one of the many great blessings of living in Peoria her entire life. About a week ago Bernie said, “I am going to miss all of my friends and all the things we used to do. I miss them already.” Bernie was a warm and happy person and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018 from 10:30 AM until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 PM at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Father Stephen Willard will officiate and burial will follow in Resurrection Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers donations in Bernie’s memory be made to St. Vincent de Paul Women’s Guild, 600 North University Street, Peoria, Il 61614, or The Ladies Auxiliary of the Spalding Council #427 Knights of Columbus, 7403 N.
