Obituary for Barbara J. Johnston
WEST PEORIA – Barbara J. Johnston, 69, of West Peoria passed away at 5 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Heddington Oaks.
Barbara was born on July 1, 1946, in Peoria to Jim and Donna Salrin. She married David Johnston on Jan. 11, 1969. He preceded her in death on Dec. 28, 2007. They never had any children but were blessed with many nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her mother, Donna Salrin; three sisters and one brother, Judy (Hal) Fuson of West Peoria, David (Sue) Salrin of Dunlap, Kathy (Phil) Borland of Glasford, and Bonnie (Mike) McSimov of Bartonville; seven nieces and nephews, Theresa (John) Powers, Ellie Salrin, Jenni (Shawn) Hoerr, Danny (Jenny) Borland, Lacey (Carl) Sindle, Chad (Kristie) McSimov, and Brad McSimov; eight great-nieces and nephews, Paige Carter, Adam Hurst, Katie and Drew Davis, Jack and Leah Borland, Lucy Sindle, and Payton McSimov; and one great-great-nephew, Noah. Also surviving are two aunts, Julia Brown and Alice Salrin; brother-in-law, Michael (Suzie) Johnston of Texas; nephew, Michael (Sarah) Johnston; great-nephews, Peyton and Jayce; and great-niece, Katelyn.
She was preceded in death by her father, Jim; one niece, Sharon Hurst; one nephew, Jim Fuson.
Barbara spent the last month of her life at Heddington Oaks with her mother, who is a resident there. It was very touching to see the two of them, both in wheelchairs, holding hands as they attended Mass together. Barb and her mother were able to spend time together.
Barb’s family was always very important to her. She always looked forward to spending time with each and every one.
She had seen heaven two times, both during surgeries, and looked forward to seeing heaven. She said heaven is beautiful with lots of flowers, trees, animals, and the sun is shining brightly.
The family wishes to thank her family doctor, Dr. John Shallet, for his compassion when explaining the news of cancer, the staff at Heddington Oaks for their skilled nursing and care, OSF Hospice for being with Barb and her family every step of the way, and the Holy Family Franciscan Friars, St. Mark’s priest, and Fr. Tom Henseler for all the support for Barb and her family.
A funeral Mass will be Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at 2:30 P.M., at Resurrection Mausoleum chapel. Franciscan Friars will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the Mausoleum chapel. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Miracle League of Central Illinois, which is a baseball league for special needs children, (421 Kays Dr., Normal, Ill., 61761) would be greatly appreciated.
