Obituary for Barbara A. Stortz

PEORIA-Barbara A. Stortz, 59 of Peoria, passed away at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at her home in Peoria after a long illness. Barb was born on February 13, 1947 in Peoria to Talbert and Agnes Kerker Kohl. On April 14, 1973, she married George Barry Stortz at Holy Family church in Peoria. He survives. Also surviving are her mother, Agnes of Peoria; three sons, Ben (Kim) Stortz, Bryan (Jamie) Stortz and Brett Stortz all of Chicago; and 3 nephews and 1 niece. She was preceded in death by her father, Talbert Kohl. Barb attended and graduated from Holy Family Grade School and Richwoods High School. She graduated from Western University in 1969 with a degree in elementary education. She was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and performed on the Dance Team. She began her career as a 4th grade teacher at Hines School in Peoria District 150. Later on, Barb and her husband owned and operated a large nightclub/restaurant in North Peoria called the Old Market Place. Due to the night hours and the raising of a family, they returned to what they enjoyed the most---teaching. She then pursed her teaching career at St. Vincent de Paul Grade School where she taught 4th grade for sixteen years, before retiring in 2002 because of her poor health. Barb enjoyed vacationing at their condo in Treasure Island, FL. She was a devoted wife, mom and soon to be a grandmother. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church where a funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. on Monday with Father Jason Gray officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. Entombment will be at Resurrection Mausoleum. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to St. Vincent de Paul Grade School in Peoria. Tributes and condolences may be submitted to
