Obituary for Anton "Tony" Joseph Engst Jr.

Anton “Tony” Joseph Engst, Jr., 82, of Germantown Hills, passed away at his residence on Friday, April 28, 2017, with his wife by his side.

He was born on November 5, 1934, in Germantown Hills, to Anton Joseph Engst Sr., and Mary Viola (Rohman) Engst. He married Jo-Ann Louise Brandt of Peoria, Illinois on February 6, 1960, at Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Peoria, Illinois. She survives.

Also surviving are two children, Michelle “Shelly” Jo-Ann Decker of Peoria, IL; Monica “Nici” Jeanne Haerter (Edward “Skip’) of Mount Plymouth, Florida; two grandchildren, Kira Michelle decker of Leesburg, Florida, and Reese Anthony Decker of Peoria; brother Donald Paul Engst (Brenda) of Danvers, IL; three nephews and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Tony was a graduate of Metamora Township High School where he enjoyed playing football and was a team captain. He studied architectural drawing at Bradley University, Peoria, IL, where he was a member of the football team.

Tony served his country proudly during peacetime in the U.S. Army Reserves. The Chicago Tribune presented Sergeant Anton J. Engst, Jr. with the Outstanding Achievement Award as a member of the 9899th Engineer Training Center in 1958. He was honorably discharged on April 1, 1963.

Tony’s career started with his father and brother in their own construction company, Anton J. Engst and Sons, General Contractor. Their company did residential as well as commercial work including the construction of King’s Retreat Center, Henry, Illinois. Following his father’s death he worked for OSF Saint Francis, Peoria, Tousley Iber Construction Company, Peoria, and then traveled coast-to-coast as a superintendent for Bostleman Corporation and other commercial builders supervising the construction of Cheddars restaurants, Red Lobsters, Olive Gardens, McDonalds, WalMarts, and shopping centers.

Tony was an adept woodworker and personally handcrafted the remodeling of the Saint Peter’s Catholic Church sacristy, Peoria, IL. After high school graduation he purchased and cleared 6 acres of land in Germantown Hills, IL. He built their family home by hand without the benefit of power tools.

His hobbies included wood sculpting, a family tradition of making wine with fruit from his vineyard. Vegetable gardening and canning, fishing, baking, and collecting fossils. He also enjoyed his volunteer time cooking and serving at Mother Teresa’s soup kitchen at Saint Mary’s Cathedral, Peoria, IL. Summers were spent at the family lake house he built at Spring Lake, Manito, IL. Following his retirement, he spent winters at their Florida home. Tony and Jo-Ann traveled extensively south-of-the-border pursuing their interest in archeology and having many adventures.

Tony was an active and doting grandparent and enjoyed attending their many activities. He enjoyed passing his knowledge on to his grandchildren and lending a hand to anyone in need. He fostered a love for nature and the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. Tony was a very knowledgeable local historian and enthusiastically shared this history to newcomers to the area.
