Obituary for Amanda A. Sarmiento

CHICAGO – Amanda A. (Sprenger) Sarmiento, 31, of Chicago, formerly of Peoria, passed away at 5:30 a.m., Sunday, March 31, 2013 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center. Amanda was born on April 4, 1981, in Peoria to Stephen F. and Kettie (Strang) Sprenger. She married Joseph J. Sarmiento IV on June 16, 2007, in Peoria. He survives. She is also survived by her parents of Peoria; brother, Nathan (Dawn) Sprenger of Elgin, IL; sister, Ashlee Sprenger of Peoria; two nephews, Kyle and Tyler Sprenger; mother-in-law, Nancy Sarmiento of Peoria; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joe and Tammy Sarmiento of Bartonville; sisters-in-law, Gloria Sarmiento of Milwaukee, Abigail Sarmiento of Peoria, and Rachel Sarmiento of Chicago; one niece, Sophia Sarmiento; grandmothers, Marion Sprenger of Peoria, Betty Strang of Peoria, and Audrey Sarmiento of Bradenton, FL; and her best four-legged friend, Davi. Amanda graduated from Woodruff High School in 1999, where she was Female Athlete of the year in 1999 and was a member of the honor society and the band. Additionally, she was All Conference Soccer, captain of the soccer team her junior and senior years, and was swim team captain. In 2003, she graduated from Bradley University, where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta. She was pursuing her master’s in education at DePaul University in Chicago. She was a three year cancer fighter and survivor. Amanda was an avid runner, soccer player, and loved to dine and travel. She was a founding member of the Belmont Bells Soccer team in Chicago, where she was a recipient of the Player’s Player Award. Additionally, she was a St. Jude runner, a fundraiser for the LEARN Charter School, and a spokesperson for Pediatric Osteosarcoma at Rush University. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m., Friday, April 5, 2013 at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Msgr. William Watson will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m., Thursday, April 4, 2013 at the church. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Cremation rites will be accorded following the Mass. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Rush University Medical Center for pediatric oncology research. Please send memorial gifts to Rush University Medical Center, 1700 W.
