Obituary for Alexander A. Goloff

EAST PEORIA-Alexander A. Goloff, 90 of East Peoria, passed away at 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, 2008 at Manor Care at Riverview. He was born on March 17, 1918 in Vladivostok, Russia to Alexander Alexandrovich and Maria Alexandravna Prebitkov Golovschikoff. Alex emigrated from Russia through Japan, Australia and Manchurian China. He married Ruth Scherff on September 15, 1942 in Peoria, recently celebrating 65 years of marriage. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Alexander A. Jr. (Caren) of Elburn, IL and Charles Nicholas “Nick” (Karen) of Secor, IL; two granddaughters, Jana (Robert) Eggleston of Virginia Beach, VA and Jennifer (Rikki) Jeans of Orlando, FL; three great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter. His parents, two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Alex received a BSME in 1938 from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and hired into Caterpillar, Inc, becoming Caterpillar’s seventh staff research engineer. He retired as senior staff of the research department in 1980 with 42 years of service. During his career, he provided Russian translation services within Caterpillar, traveled with executives to the Soviet Union and hosted Soviet ministers visiting Caterpillar in Peoria, IL. In the late 40’s, Alex taught Russian at Bradley University and continued to teach within the home for many years. An avid reader, he enjoyed the arts including music, painting and photography as well as the sciences and outdoor activities. He was a long term Scout Master for the Boy Scouts and Sea Scouts, and a mentor to many during his life. He supported many organizations including Lakeview Museum, WTVP public television and National Public Radio. Private graveside services were held at the Carpenter family plot in Columbus Junction, IA. A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 10 a.m. at the Baha’i Center in Peoria with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to WCBU National Public Radio or WTVP Public Television.
