Obituary for Albert Starr

PEORIA - Albert R. Starr, 100, of Peoria passed away peacefully at 7:20 a.m. June 18, 2016, at his home.

He was born in Matherville, Ill., on Jan. 24, 1916, to Anthony and Rose Starr. He married Evelyn Marie McCain on July 5, 1947.

Al was a graduate of the University of Illinois in Civil Engineering. He held a Professional Engineering License for the State of Illinois. He graduated from Bradley University with a Master’s degree in Engineering Administration. Al was a member of Chi Epsilon.

He served in WWII for four years in France, Belgium, and Germany with the 1263rd Combat Engineering Battalion and later became the commanding officer. His battalion was 45 kilometers from Berlin when Germany surrendered. In 1950, Major Starr was recalled to active duty in the Korean War and served two years.

Al was employed by Caterpillar for 39 years, retiring as plant engineer at the Mossville facility. He was active in the community, serving on the Peoria Board of Appeals, as a board member of the Boy Scouts and the Red Cross, on the advisory board of the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis Hospital, and on the Chamber of Commerce Education Committee.

He was a pilot and loved flying his plane for many years. Al was an avid tennis player and played until he was 89.

Surviving are his wife; sons, Gregory (Ina), Jeffrey (Barbara); and daughter, Susan Starr. He has three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and one brother.

Al was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, where he was a former communion minister.

Cremation rites will be accorded by Wright & Salmon Mortuary. There will be no visitation. A private family service will be held at Resurrection Mausoleum.
