GREENSBORO – Mr. J. Gordon Merdian, age 94, a resident of Greensboro since 2010 and a former resident of Peoria, Illinois died Thursday, June 28th at his residence.
Born November 9th, 1917 in Henry, Illinois, Gordon was a son of the late John and Anna Holler. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during World War two, stationed in the Aleutian Islands. He retired from Wilkins Pipe and Supply Company in Peoria.
For over forty years he was a member of St. Philomena Catholic Church and its Men’s Club in Peoria and at the time of his death he was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in High Point, North Carolina. In addition to his parents, Gordon was preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth, Melvin and Donald Merdian and two sisters, Annie McMaster and JoAnn Wibbelsman.
On October 1st, 1949 he married the former Mary L. Houlihan who survives of the home.
Also surviving are two daughters, Karen DuCharme and her husband Bob of Lexington, North Carolina and Donna Wood and her husband Mike of High Point, North Carolina; one son Dave Merdian and his wife Betty of Troy, Michigan; six grandchildren, Kristin Hansen, Erica Roberts, Kyle Williams, Caitlin Merdian, Amanda Lord and Megan Merdian; six great-grandchildren, Emily, Ellie, Matthew, Madeline, Kolbie and Hunter.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 3rd in St. Philomena Catholic Church in Peoria with Msgr. Mark Merdian and the Reverend David Richardson celebrants. Entombment will follow in Resurrection Mausoleum. Visitation will be at the church Tuesday, one hour prior to the service.
A Memorial Mass will be announced for a later date at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in High Point. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
