PEORIA - John Michael Murphy, 70, of Peoria passed away at his home on Thursday, June 28, 2012.
He was born in Peoria on November 17, 1941 to John and Dorothy (Sinclair) Murphy. He married Gloria Capranica on December 18, 1965 in Peoria.
Mike graduated from Spalding, joined the U.S. Navy for three years and graduated from Bradley University with a bachelors’ degree in history and a masters’ degree in counseling.
He was employed at Bradley University for 37 years and retired as executive director of housing. He was named an emeritus of the university. Mike was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Church. He was a member of several of the reunion committees at Spalding, and met with his classmates at Ludy’s each month.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria; two sons Michael (Kris) Murphy of Downers Grove, IL and Stephen Murphy of Peoria; one sister Patty (Larry) Unes of Lake Barrington, IL; one brother Steve (Jan) of Anderson, IN; and three grandchildren, Amanda, Elizabeth and Andrew.
He was preceded in death by three infant sons and his parents.
He was a devoted family man, especially to his wife, children and grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent DePaul Church in Peoria. Rev. Donald Henderson and Rev. Michael Driscoll will officiate. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church (with a scripture reading at 3:30) and one half hour before Tuesday’s Mass. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Peoria.
